Enhancing Capacity in Drug Discovery: UGM Collaborates with Dundee University through TNE Grant Program

The Doctoral Program in Biotechnology, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada, in collaboration with the Biotechnology Research Center, organized a discussion session and guest lecture on Monday, September 29, 2025, with Dr. Mahmood Ahmed, Chair of Medicinal Chemistry and Head of the Innovative Targets Portfolio at the Drug Discovery Unit (DDU), University of Dundee.

Dr. Mahmood, who also serves as Interim Associate Dean for Enterprise and Economic Transformation, joined the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee, in 2024. With extensive experience in pharma, biotech, and academia—including roles at GSK (UK), the establishment of a drug discovery center in Singapore, academic entrepreneurship, and co-founding two biotechnology companies—he has contributed to the progression of multiple clinical stage assets and brings deep expertise in translational research. read more

Guest Lecture: Genomics and Bioinformatics 2024

On September 18, 2024, Study Program of Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada hosted a guest lecture titled “Genomics and Bioinformatics 2024.” This event aims to enhance access to education in the fields of genomics and bioinformatics, which are crucial for advancing scientific research and innovation. The lecture took place in the Biotechnology Lecture Room on the 3rd floor of the PAU Building.

The guest speaker for this event is Dr. David Lopez from The French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), France, a renowned expert in the field of genomics and bioinformatics. Dr. Lopez has made significant contributions to the understanding of genetic data analysis and its applications in agriculture and environmental science. His insights are expected to provide valuable knowledge to students and faculty alike. read more

General Lecture by Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan 2024

On August 14, 2024, the General Lecture by the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, took place in the Biotechnology Lecture Room on the 3rd floor of the PAU Building. This event is part of a broader initiative to enhance knowledge sharing among students and researchers.

The lecture featured two distinguished speakers from NAIST. The first speaker, Prof. Hisaji Maki, provided a general introduction to the Nara Institute of Science and Technology. Following Prof. Maki’s introduction, Prof. Yasumasa Bessho presented his research on “Valproic acid induces axial skeleton anomaly via perturbation of the somite segmentation clock.” This topic is particularly relevant as it explores the implications of chemical exposure on developmental biology, a critical area of study that can lead to better understanding and prevention of congenital anomalies. read more
