The Doctoral Biotechnology Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada is pleased to announce Hasna Fadlilatul Bidayah’s successful completion of her doctoral studies. Her dissertation defense was place on January 14, 2025, marking a crucial milestone in her academic career.
Under the supervision of her esteemed supervisory team—Prof. Rarastoeti Pratiwi, M.Sc., Ph.D., Prof. Abdul Salam M. Sofro, Ph.D., and Dr. dr. Teguh Triyono, M.Kes., SpPK., Subsp.KV(K), Subsp.BDKT(K)—Hasna successfully conducted pioneering research on the genetic and molecular analysis of the ABO blood group system in five Indonesian cities.
Her findings offer insight on the location of antigen expression and allele frequency in the ABO blood type system in Indonesia, a significant issue with ramifications for transfusion and transplantation therapy. This work makes an important contribution to global health databases by providing the first complete data on ABO blood type polymorphism in Indonesia, furthering our understanding of genetic variation and its significance in healthcare. The results of her six-year study (2019-2023), which included over 1,650,000 population data points, not only improve the precision of molecular identification methods but also provide valuable insights for improving transfusion safety, lowering transplantation risks, and developing targeted therapies. Moreover, her work aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by promoting equitable access to safe blood transfusion and transplantation services through better data and understanding.
In addition to her dissertation, Hasna’s study was published in the prestigious publication BMC study Notes under the title “Distribution of ABO and D Antigen Expression in Yogyakarta, Java Island: A Pioneer Large-Scale Study in Indonesia”. The publication emphasizes the importance of her work at both the national and international levels.
We congratulate Hasna on her outstanding success and we acknowledge her supervisors for their essential help and advice. For further information about our program or research, please contact the Doctoral Biotechnology Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
