Doctoral Program in Biotechnology Hosts 2025 Sarasehan: “Reflecting on 2024 and Embracing New Spirit for 2025”

The Doctoral Program in Biotechnology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully conducted the 2025 Sarasehan event, themed “Reflecting on 2024 and Embracing a New Spirit for 2025.” Doctoral biotechnology students from all cohorts attended the occasion, as did Dr. Tri Rini Nuringtyas, Head of the Doctoral Program in Biotechnology. This meeting aims to foster a sense of social connection and academic bonding among the students.

Dr. Tri Rini Nuringtyas delivered an introductory speech and explained the objective of the Sarasehan. Each student then introduced themselves and presented their ongoing research topics, facilitating information sharing and a collaborative environment within the program. Dr. Nuringtyas’ talk included smart recommendations along with strategies to assist students complete their courses on time. She underlined the need of keeping an active presence on campus to improve the academic environment and stimulate intellectual engagement. She also discussed the numerous co-working spaces accessible to doctoral students, such as specific spaces for Doctoral Biotechnology students, combined co-working spaces for Master’s and Doctoral Biotechnology students, and the UGM Postgraduate co-working space. These facilities are intended to help students with writing, studying, and collaborative research. Dr. Nuringtyas also mentioned numerous planned programs to help students and professionals advance their careers. Notable among these are the forthcoming bioinformatics workshop concentrating on genomes and transcriptomics data processing, as well as financing help for foreign seminar participation, which is available to all students. read more

Curriculum Workshop of Doctoral Program in Biotechnology Emphasizes Research Relevance and Industry Engagement

Yogyakarta, November 28, 2024 — The Study Program of Doctor in Biotechnology (SP-DBiotech), Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), successfully conducted a comprehensive Curriculum Workshop aimed at reviewing and enhancing the curriculum to ensure its continued relevance to current scientific developments and stakeholder needs. This workshop was part of UGM’s broader effort to strengthen postgraduate education across all faculties.

Held on November 28, 2024, the event brought together internal stakeholders including faculty members and students, as well as external experts from partner institutions such as the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), PT Dermama Bioteknologi Laboratory, and the Stem Cell and Cancer Research (SCCR) Indonesia. 10th National Biotechnology Seminar at UGM: Building Interdisciplinary Solutions for Sustainability

Yogyakarta – The Research Center and Study Program of Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully held the 10th National Biotechnology Seminar with the theme “Fostering Interdisciplinary Solutions in Biotechnology for Sustainability.” The event, which took place at the Graduate School Unversitas Gadjah Mada on Saturday, October 26, 2024, gathered over 200 participants from 36 different institutions, including academics, researchers, and practitioners.

This seminar highlighted the urgency of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing increasingly complex global challenges, such as climate change, food security, and environmental degradation. “Through an integrated biotechnology approach, we hope to find innovative solutions to ensure sustainability across various sectors, including agriculture, health, industry, and the environment,” said Agung Dian Kharisma, S.Pd.Si., M.Biotech, Ph.D., the seminar’s committee chairperson. read more

Promoting Domestic Product Independence, The Research Center and Study Program of Biotechnology UGM Holds DNA Polymerase Production Workshop

Yogyakarta – The Research Center and Study Program of Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with PT Widya Teknologi Hayati, successfully conducted a workshop titled “Producing Crude Polymerase from Escherichia coli” on Friday (October 25, 2024). The workshop was attended by 35 participants from various backgrounds, including representatives from universities, research centers, and industry.

The Head of the Research Center for Biotechnology UGM, explained in her opening remarks that the workshop aims to encourage the development of domestic products, particularly in the biotechnology field. “One of the main focuses is the production of DNA polymerase enzyme from Escherichia coli bacteria,” said Dr. Yekti Asih Purwestri, S.Si., M.Si. This enzyme plays a crucial role in various modern biotechnology applications, such as the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), which is widely used in medical research and drug development. read more

General Lecture by Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan 2024

On August 14, 2024, the General Lecture by the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, took place in the Biotechnology Lecture Room on the 3rd floor of the PAU Building. This event is part of a broader initiative to enhance knowledge sharing among students and researchers.

The lecture featured two distinguished speakers from NAIST. The first speaker, Prof. Hisaji Maki, provided a general introduction to the Nara Institute of Science and Technology. Following Prof. Maki’s introduction, Prof. Yasumasa Bessho presented his research on “Valproic acid induces axial skeleton anomaly via perturbation of the somite segmentation clock.” This topic is particularly relevant as it explores the implications of chemical exposure on developmental biology, a critical area of study that can lead to better understanding and prevention of congenital anomalies. read more
